A Nautical Holiday Tradition

This enchanting event showcases Newport's vibrant waterfront community as beautifully decorated vessels parade through the harbor. Spectators can enjoy this free, family-friendly display from various vantage points along the Newport waterfront, making it an ideal outing for people of all ages. The parade features a variety of watercraft that call Narragansett Bay home, including leisure boats of all sizes, commercial boats, fishing boats, and even a U.S. Coast Guard vessel.


Parade Route and Viewing Spots

The parade begins south of the Goat Island Causeway, proceeding east past the Newport Yacht Club, where the judges will be stationed. The procession continues past Perrotti ParkBowen's Wharf, and Bannister's Wharf before completing the harbor loop at Goat Island Causeway. For the best views, head to Perrotti Park or Bowen's and Bannister's Wharves. The entire route offers spectators ample opportunities to marvel at the creativity and festive spirit of the participants.


Competition and Categories

Participating vessels will vie for top honors in several categories:

  • Best Decorated Sailboat (commercial and recreational)
  • Best Decorated Powerboat (commercial and recreational)
  • Best Decorated Fishing Boat
  • The Tim Mills Team Spirit Award

The Tim Mills Team Spirit Award, named after the former harbormaster who passed away in 2020, celebrates the boat that best embodies community spirit and camaraderie. Tim Mills was a longtime advocate of the boat parade from its inaugural event in 1997, participating first as a boat owner and later as a leader of this community event.


Join the Festivities

Want to participate? Boat owners and organizations can register online for the parade until 12:00 p.m. on November 28th. The awards ceremony will take place at the Newport Yacht Club at 7:30 p.m. following the parade.This year, the parade committee has chosen Margaret Mary "Muffin" Dubuc as Parade Marshal. Muffin, a local Newporter and avid sailor, was commodore of the Goat Island Yacht Club, a volunteer and fundraiser for many historic sailing events and regattas, and a consummate friend of the Newport waterfront.


More Than Just Boats

While the illuminated boats are the main attraction, the Newport Illuminated Boat Parade offers much more. The event kicks off the holiday season in Newport, with many local businesses and restaurants offering special promotions and festive menus. Visitors can enjoy holiday shopping at the unique boutiques along Thames Street or warm up with a hot chocolate at one of the cozy cafes overlooking the harbor.


Weather Considerations

In case of inclement weather on November 29th, the parade will be rescheduled to Saturday, November 30th at 6 p.m. The weather date will be called by 10:30 a.m. on the morning of the 29th, so be sure to check the official website or local news for updates.Don't miss this spectacular event that kicks off the holiday season in true Newport style!
